BY DR. E. S. NEELAKANTAN
Muhurta may be called as the Soul of Time. In its womb lies the future of an
event activated in that particular time. In common Parlance, a Muhurtha
refers to a time interval of 48 Minutes representing 1/15th part of either
the Diurnal or the Noctural duration in any specific day. While Astrology is
a combination of fate and freewill, Muhurtha or Electional Astrology deals
only with freewill. While natal horoscope deals with what we call Destiny,
the power to modify its consequences vests with Electional Astrology. In
this overview of this branch of Astrology, I shall try to highlight some
important rules and the exceptions available to an Astrologer while fixing a
Muhurtha.
SIGNIFICANCE OF MUHURTHA:
A good Muhurtha crowns all actions with success; an evil Muhurtha spoils the
outcome. Here is an anecdote from the life of Saint Vidyaranya. Directed by
a dream, the two warrior brothers Harihara and Bukka, sought the blessings
and guidance of Swami Vidyaranya. Earlier Muhammad Bin - Tughlaq had
converted them to Islam. The saint reconverted them to Hinduism, which is
usually referred to as an art of homecoming. The aim of the Warrior brothers
was to set up an empire; this later on came to be known as the Vijayanagar
empire (Incidentally Late Shri B. Surianarayana Rao has written a book about
this empire under the title, The never-to-be forgotten empire).
For fixing up a good Muhurtha, Vidyaranya prayed to Goddess Sarada, firstly
to bless the kingdom and secondly to ensure an uninterrupted reign of 2000
years. Swami Vidyaranya requested Harihara and Bukka to position themselves
on one side of the mountain, while he would stand on the other side,
observing the Sun and the Stars and signal the auspicious moment, by blowing
the Conch.
Interestingly enough, the brothers heard the sound of a conch being blown
and immediately they treated that moment as the 'Muhurtha' ( mentioned by
Vidyaranya) and laid the foundation stone. Surprisingly, for a second time,
the sound of the conch being blown was heard, thereby creating a confusion
in the minds of the brothers. Now, they were in a dilemma, not knowing when
Vidyaranya had blown the conch and how come, the sound was heard twice.
Actually the first sound heard was that of some anonymous person who had
blown the conch after which the sound of the conch being blown by Vidyaranya
was heard and therefore the empire was started on a wrong Muhurtha.
Swami Vidyaranya prayed to Goddess Sharadamba and the latter pacified
Vidyaranya, stating that it was at her instance the conch was blown
initially. The time was not yet ripe for a 2000 -year empire and based on
the time of Muhurtha for the conch being blown for the first time, the
empire would have a glorious reign for about 250 years. However the Goddess
reassured Vidyaranya that after 500 years from that moment, his dream of a
Hindu empire which would last for 2000 years would get fulfilled.
Here I would like to summarize this episode with the conclusion that a
difference of a few minutes in the timing of a Muhurtha, would make a huge
difference to the outcome of an event.
CARVING OUT EXCEPTIONS
To understand Astrology, we need to know the rule and also the exception. A
few exceptions to a rule are discussed in Muhurtha Chintamani.
-
Oil bath is prohibited on Shasti but the same is permitted if Shasti falls
on a Saturday.
-
Cohabitation is prohibited on a New Moon Day; the exception is Diwali day
which at times falls on New Moon day.
-
Tonsure is forbidden on Chaturdashi day but the same is allowed at a
Tirtha - Kshetra (Pilgrim Centre).
-
Eating Flesh is prohibited on Ashtami excepting when the day is
Durgashtami, which falls in Dussehra. If I were to interpret this rule
correctly, vegetarians abstain from eating flesh at all times. So the
prohibition and its exception applies only to Non - vegetarians. This rule
may be read in tandem with the general rule of Hindu dharma which states,
Ahimsa Paramo dharma (Non -Violence is the highest dharma).
BENEFIC ASPECT ON MUHURTHA LAGNA
Usually the aspect of benefics on the Muhurtha Lagna is a very good feature
which fortifies the Ascendant. When we speak of benefics we can speak only
of Jupiter or Mercury. The sign aspected by Venus is inauspicious as the
presence of Venus in the 7this prohibited. The mutual aspect of Venus and
Jupiter is also prohibited in a good Muhurtha which means that if Venus
occupies the Muhurtha Lagna, Jupiter should not occupy the 7th.
SURYA SANKRANTHI AND PUNYAKAALA :
It is said that the time Sun moves from one sign to another is a
Punyakaalam. On this basis, we have the Dakshinayana and Uttarayana
Punyakaalam, Thula Vishu Punyakaalam, so on and so forth. However for fixing
up a Muhurtha it is not an auspicious period. Otherwise for performance of
good deeds, those periods could be termed as favourable. When there is a
Solar ingress into a sign, the 16 Nadikas ( 6 hours, 24 minutes ) before and
after that moment of Solar Transit, is to be avoided for a Muhurtha. In
general that period is referred to as Punyakaala, meaning that any good
deed, performed at that time yields manifold benefits to the person doing
that activity.
The next question is how to compute the 16 Nadikas or the time duration of 6
hours, 24 minutes?
SOLAR INGRESS INTO |
PERIOD TO BE RECKONED (BEFORE / AFTER/ MIDDLE |
CANCER, LEO, SCORPIO, TAURUS, AND AQUARIUS |
16 NADIKAS BEFORE THE SOLAR TRANSIT |
GEMINI, VIRGO, SAGITTARIUS, PISCES AND CAPRICORN |
16 NADIKAS AFTER THE SOLAR TRANSIT |
LIBRA AND ARIES |
8 NADIKAS BEFORE THE TRANSIT PLUS THE 8 NADIKAS AFTER THE TRANSIT |
NOTE:
-
In Libra and Aries, the Punyakaala occurs both prior to & after the
Transit. This applicable to Vishu Punyakaalam and the Thula Vishu
Punyakaalam.
-
While Uttarayana Punyakaalam falls in Uttarayana, the Dakshinayana
Punyakaalam occurs prior to the transit of Sun into Cancer viz., both the
above Punyakaalams fall in Uttarayana only.
-
To understand this table, let me explain it in a simple way. After the
Solar Transit into Capricorn, we celebrate Pongal or the Uttarayana
Punyakaalam. The same is true when Sun moves in to the houses of Jupiter
and Mercury. The eight Nadikas before and after the Solar Transit is holy
for Vishu and Thula Vishu Punyakaalam. In all other cases, the 16 Nadikas
prior to the Solar Transit is auspicious.
- Surya Sankranthi period is to be avoided for Muhurtha fixing.
-
The Sankranthi day is also held to be a beneficial day for initiation of a
Mantra.
MUHURTHA IN RELATION TO REPAYMENT OF DEBTS:
Lots of people try to obtain freedom from debts. Usually loans are taken for
some purpose, say construction of a House, buying a Land or a Car, for
Education of a child, so on and so forth. The Secret towards becoming
debt-free lies in choosing a Muhurtha, which ensures that the person is
relieved of the debt rather soon.
-
The most favourable time for loan repayment is the “Maithiri Muhurtham”.
Let us see the meaning of this term now.
Maithiri Muhurtham is formed when
- The rising sign is Aries and Moon is in Ashwini Star or
-
The rising sign is Scorpio and Moon is in Anuradha Star.
Please note that in both the above cases, Moon will occupy the
Ascendant.
-
The Lagna should fall in Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn on a Saturday
and there is Pradosham on that day. It is be noted that the loan repayment
should be done on a Shani Pradosham day when Lagna falls in a Movable
sign.
-
Gulika Kalam is good for repayment on loan. For the repayment of the first
instalment, Gulika Kala should prevail on the following days and Thithis.
DAY |
THITHI |
GULIKA KALA |
Tuesday |
Navami |
12 to 1:30 pm |
Saturday |
Chathurdashi |
6 to 7:30 am |
Sunday |

3 to 4:30 pm |
Please note that I have mentioned Gulika Kala timings as they ordinarily
appear in calendars. Based on the Latitude and Longitude of a plane, the
time might vary a bit.
CHANDRASHTAMA:
We are all scared of Chandrashtama. Most of us avoid doing even the routine
jobs on that day. But the effects of Chandrashtama seem to be exaggerated.
-
Chandrashtama is not evil, when Moon is waxing and is a benefic Rasi or
benefic Amsa.
-
If the Lords of Janmarasi and the 8th are friends, Chandrshtama loses all
power of evil. For example, a person born in Mesha rasi will get
Chadrashtama when Moon is in Scorpio, which is again owned by the same
planet Mars. So, there is no adverse effect.
OIL - BATH:
In Kerala and other places, people habitually take bath anointing their head
and body with oil. For this purpose, there are medicated oils such as Neeli
- bhringadi Oil, Kayyunyadi Oil, Balaguluchyadi Oil and Chandanadi Oil. By
doing so, the heat within the body gets reduced. It also cures diseases such
as cold, rhinitis, sinusitis, bronchitis and headache. Many people take oil
- bath on Sundays, since it is a holiday and they can relax in the
afternoon. Both these tenets are wrong. Oil - bath should be taken only on
Wednesdays and Saturdays. On Saturday, it is better to use medicated oil,
manufactured using Sesame Oil rather than Coconut Oil. For women, there is a
different rule - they should take oil bath on Tuesdays and Fridays. Oil bath
is forbidden on Prathama, Chaturthi, Shasti, Navami, Chaturdashi and New
Moon Day. The following days are inauspicious for taking an oil bath.
- A day ruled by Jyeshta, Uttaraphalguni, Sravana and Ardra.
- The Janma Nakshatra, 10th and 19th Stars therefrom.
- Sankranthi day.
On a Thursday, ruled by Swathi, when the Thithi is Tritiya or Panchami, an
oil bath taken gives rise to both health and wealth. It is also said that
taking bath on a Dasami day promotes life, reputation and intelligence. Oil
bath is prohibited on Dwadashi day, while it is allowed on Ekadasi day,
provided you use minimum quantity of oil.
KARTRU DOSHA
There are two types of doshas in Muhurtha viz., Nitya Dosha and Kartru
Dosha. In the former case, the dosha lies with the Muhurtha itself while in
the latter case, the dosha lies in the fact that the Muhurtha is unsuitable
for the Karta. Hence in the latter case, we use the term Kartru Dosha.
-
Chandrashtama: For all activities, Chandrashtama is unsuitable. In the
care of Upanayana Samskara, apart from looking from the boy's star, we
should additionally ensure that the day should not be Chandrashtama for
the boy's father. In an Upanayanam Ceremony, the boy is treated as the
discipline (Sishya), while the boy's father acts as the Guru. Hence the
need to avoid Chandrashtama for the boy's father.
-
The 88th pada and the 108th pada are unsuitable for any Muhurtha. Let us
say a person is born in 4th pada of Poorvaphalguni Star. Then a Muhurat
cannot be fixed in Poorvaphalguni 3rd pada (108th pada) or Ardra 4th pada
(88th pada). A similar rule exists in horoscope maching also. The boy's
star should not be the 88th or 108th pada from the girl's asterism.
-
Vipat (3rd star), Pratyara (5th star) and Vadha (7th star) are prohibited
for any Muhurtha. In the first cycle upto 9 stars, this is the rule. In
the next cycle of 9 stars counted from Aranjanma star, the taboo applies
only to 1st padha of Vipat star, 4th pada of Pratyara star and 3rd pada of
Vadha star. In the third cycle of 9 stars, counted from Trijanma star,
only the Moon in a malfic Amsa is to be avoided for the 21st, 23rd and
25th stars.
-
There is one more rule which I will cite here. Uthara traya hasteshu,
Swati semyanu
Radhayoho
Vipat pratyara doshascha
Vadha dosho na vidyathe
The dosha attributable to Vipat, Pratyara and Vadha are not applicable to
the following stars viz., Urtaraphalguni, Uttarashada, Uttarabhadrapada,
Hasta, Swati, Mrgasira and Anuradha.
RASI THYAJYAM:
The 4 Ghatikas of Vishanadi are inauspicious. The first brings ruin; the
second adversely affects the Individual, the 3rd causes total ruin, the 4th
hurts the prosperity of the family. Which are the rasis, to be avoided, we
will see in the following table;

THITHI TYAJYAM:
From Prathama of the bright fortnight till the full Moon day, Thithi Tyajyam
occurs a few Ghatikas after the commence of the Thithi. For (Sukla) Prathama
it occurs after 24 Ghatikas; For Dwitiya 12 Ghatikas and for Full Moon it is
35 Ghatikas. So for the fifteen Thithis the Ghatikas are 24, 12, 55, 5, 54,
5, 34, 10, 21, 7, 29, 6, 13, 21 and 35 respectively.
NAKSHATRA TYAJYAM
Nakshatra Thyajyam is quite significant in Astrology. Nakshatra Thyajyam is
an inauspicious time of approximately 1 hour and 36 minutes every day. No
auspicious Muhurtam is suggested during this time window. Many Panchangs
show Nakshatra Thyajyam as Varjyam in daily Panchangam. Nakshatra Thyajyam
is known as Visha Ghatis in North India.Marriage, Chudakaram (Mundan),
Annaprasana Samskara, entering into new house, travellingor any other
auspicious work should be avoided during Nakshatra Thyajyam. The exact
timings of Nakshtra tyajyam can be found in the table as follows.
NEUTRALISATION OF TYAJYAM:
The following asterisms have no Thyajyam:- Ardra, Sravana, Mrigasirsha,
Swathi, Utharashada, Rohini and Anuradha.
A rising sign affected by Thyajyam becomes auspicious if the Moon be located
in it, well-dignified, or, if Jupiter be stationed in a quadrant.
The Moon located in the 9th or 10th house aspected by Jupiter transcends
Thyajyam.
Waxing Moon in exaltation or in her own Navamsa sweeps off the evil effects
of Thyajyam as Garuda does the serpent. Waxing Moon in the rising sign or in
“ Simhasanamsa” has the same influence. A sign occupied or aspected by a
benefic subdues the effect of Thyajyam.
A sign coinciding with Thyajyam at the ending moments of its (sign's)
duration should be rejected, if not aspected by a benefic. If, however,
there be a benefic in the sign, there will be no Thyajyam.
Jupiter in Exaltation and holding his own Navamsa remedies the effects of
Thyajyam coinciding with the rising sign.
TRI JYESHTA
There is an added dictum to be followed while fixing up a marriage Muhurtha
which is termed as “ Tri Jyeshta Varjayet”. So what are the “Tri Jyeshtas”
or rather the three “Jyeshtas”?
-
Jyeshta 1 is the eldest son or rather the “Jyeshta Kumaran” or the
“Seemantha Putran” in case the first child is a son.
-
The “Jyeshta” month which refers to the Solar month June - July or the
Lunar month of Jyeshta. This is Jyeshta 2.
- Jyeshta 3 is the Star Jyeshta which falls in Vrischika Rasi.
Now the rule is that in the Jyeshta month, the eldest son who happens to be
born in Jyeshta star should not get married. In this interesting rule we
find a mixture of fate and freewill. Eldest child of a person, being Male,
is a function of destiny. Birth in Jyeshta star is also a function of
destiny. But fixing the marriage of such groom is left to the discretion of
the Astrologer, who has to use his power of discretion, in rejecting the
Jyeshta month for the boy's marriage.
TRI NAVAMI DOSHA
When we travel, we also plan our return tickets. The above rule can be
explained in two parts viz., choosing the date for booking return ticket and
in case there is a second trip to be made, choosing a date for that trip.
This rule specifies the exceptions and any day or date which is not covered
by this rule is a good day for travel. One should not return home
(i) On the 9th day from the date of commencement of travel.
(ii) 9th Thithi or
(iii) 9th Nakshatra.
Suppose you leave your home on 1st April you are not supposed to come back
home on the 9th April. The second aspect of this rule is that in case you
have come back from a tour on say, 11th April, then you should not plan to
go on another trip on 19th April. There is a similar embargo on 9th
Nakshatra from the Nakshatra of return and the 9th Thithi from the Thithi on
which you have returned from an earlier trip. All these three factors
combine to make up Trinavani Dosha.
VIJAYADASAMI
We celebrate Dussehra for nine full days and the tenth day is called as
Vijayadasami. Technically speaking it is the 10th Thithi in the bright half
of Ashwina month. That day is the giver of Success in all undertakings. If,
in addition, Shravana Nakshatra is also present, then it is extremely
auspicious. I see lots of Kindergarden schools advertising. In that their
Pre - KG classes would commence on Vijayadasami day and a special class is
conducted on that date to commence education. Truly this is laudable as a
good Muhurtha can help tide over any defect in the natal chart which could
affect the child's studies. The “Akshara Bhyasa” or the learning of
Alphabets should be commenced in Uttarayana or rather when the Sun is in its
Northern course. The only demerit in a Vijayadasami Muhurtha is that it
falls in Dakshinayanam.
GOW - DHULI MUHURTHA
When a suitable time is not available, the Gow- Dhuli Muhurtha comes to
one's rescue. Several doshas get annulled by Golu - Dhuli Muhurtha. This
Muhurtha is a time interval of 24 Minutes comprising of 12 Minutes before
Sunset and 12 Minutes after Sunset.
ABHIJIT NAKSHATRA AND ABHIJIT MUHURTHA:
There is some confusion when we utter the word “Abhijit”. Is it a Muhurtha
or is it a Nakshatra?. The answer is “Both” but Abhijit Nakshatra is
different from Abhijit Muhurtha, though both of them are auspicious for
performing good deeds. The last quarter of Uttarashada Nakshatra and the One
- Fifteenth part of Sravana Nakshtra is termed as Abhijit Nakshatra. Bala
Bhadra in his Hora Ratna deals with Abhijit Nakshatra and it is significant
to note that Moon takes approximately eight Hours to traverse this
nakshatra.
A Muhurtha is an interval of 48 Minutes and in a day we have 15 Muhurthas
and at night we have 15 Muhurthas. The day Muhurthas are termed Dina
Muhurthas and the Night Muhurthas are termed as Nisha Muhurthas. So 48 x 30
is 1440 Minutes which translates into 24 Hours (1440/60). In the sequence of
day Muhurthas the eighth Muhurtha is known as Abhijit Muhurtha. In fact you
don't need a computer to find out this time. If the Sun is exactly over your
head it is Abhijit Muhurtha and the Brahmachari invested with Saved Thread
do their daily “MADHYANIKAM” in this time and look at the Sun with the
specified mantra “JOKCHA SURYAM DRSE”. This Muhurtha is extremely auspicious
and capable of remedying all evils.
PRADOSHA
Pradosha refers to the evening twilight hours. It commences 90 Minutes
before Sunset and ends 90 Minutes after Sunset. I can say that this term
“Pradosha” might refer to the daily evening twilight hours or the one which
falls on Trayodashi day. Devotees throng to worship Shiva in the Pradosha of
Trayodashi day since it is believed that all Devas worship Lord Shiva on
that day and he performs the cosmic dance during Pradosha time and blesses
devotees.
For practitioners of Mantra Siddhi, Pradosha is a very special time. The
evening twilight time ---- falls everyday is termed as “Nithya Pradosha
Time” and if any Mantra Japa is done at that time, it is believed that it is
ten times more effective. When Pradosha falls on a Monday it is termed as
Soma Pradosha and during that time Mantra Japa is 20 times more effective.
The most auspicious day is when Pradosha coincides with a Saturday and this
is termed as Shani Pradosham, wherein the chanting of any Mantra is 50 times
more effective than on a normal day.Last but not the least, chanting of a
mantra during times of eclipse is 100 times more effective. Therefore one can
chant any chosen mantra during an eclipse and gain hundredfold benefits, even
if the eclipse is not visible at that place.
MANDI AND GULIKA:
An avoidable feature of the rising sign is the presence of Mandi or Gulika
in rising sign. Assuming that daytime is 12 hours, we can cnvert the same
into 30 Ghatikas. Mandi rises on Sunday 26 Ghatikas after sunrise; on
Saturday it rises after 22 Ghatikas and so from Sunday to Saturday it rises
26, 22, 18, 14, 10, 6 and 2 Ghatikas after sunrise. Similarly at night it
rises after 10, 6, 2, 26, 22, 18 and 14 Ghatikas counted from Sunday till
Saturday respectively.
In the order of Sunday to Saturday if we count we get 7 days; Let us divide
a day into 8 parts and allocate the first Seven parts to the Lords of these
days and the 8th part to Gulika. The first part of the day will belong to
the Lord of the day and then the eight parts will be serially allocated. So,
for each day, there is a certain time which is called Gulikakala. The
following table will give the exact time for Mandi and Gulika;

GULIKA - FAVOURABLE OR UNFAVOURABLE?
Is Gulika Kala favourable or Unfavourable? One cannot give a ---- reply to
this question in terms of “Yes” or “No”. Gulika is Good or Bad depending
upon what activity you propose to do. A knife in the hands of a barber is
useful for shaving; in the hands of a cook is good for cutting vegetables;
in the hands of a surgeon, helps cure a disease; in the hands of a criminal,
is used to kill someone and do harm. Likewise one can compare Gulika to a
knife. If you are clear about what activity you propose to do, one can say
if the time is auspicious or not. It is not possible to answer a generic
question, Is Gulika Kala, good or bad? Gulika is favourable for the
following activities.
PERFORMANCES FOR WHICH GULIKA IS FAVORABLE:
The general notion in the astrological parlance about Gulika is that the
Gulikakaala is not congenial for any good work. But contrary to this notion,
there are some activities for which Gulika is ordained as favorable.
- To store corn,
- Oil bath.
- Reaping the field,
- Business.
- Wearing ornaments,
- Pay off debts.
- Kindling fire for sacrificial purposes.
- To apply perfumes.
- To take medicines.
- For black magic [Aabhichaara], Offering gifts,
- To commence vedic studies.
- To erect flag staff,
- To fix the door frames in the new building,
- To enter the kingdom,
- To take horse, elephants etc., to the stable.
REMEDY FOR GULIKA:
It is said that in Kaliyuga, Vices outnumber virtues. Still these vices have
remedies. In this manner the Gulika dosha also can remedied.
A few such remedies are given below.
-
Jupiter having full strength posited in Lagna or trine of Lagna will
alleviate all doshas
-
Venus and Mercury having full strength occupy their own varga mitigate all
doshas.
-
When a benefic occupies a quadrant and is aspected by benefics and the
malefics are posited in 3-6-11, then also the doshas are remedied. Even if
a malefic is in the lagna, it is nullified.
-
Moon and Mercury when having full strength aspect mutually and no malefic
is posited in the navaamsa of lagna, the dosha gets nullified.
- Jupiter and Venus jointly posited in a quadrant remedy all doshas.
-
If Venus is posited in the 11th navaamsa from the Navaamsa of Guru, the
doshas are alleviated.
-
If Mercury is posited in the 11th navaamsa from the navaamsa of Jupiter,
then the Dosha vanishes.
-
If the day Lord is strong, Moon is strong, a benefic is posited in the
Lagna, the Gulika dosha will be nullified.
-
If Moon occupies the 11th Raasi from the Navaamsa Rasi of Budha, all
doshas vanish.
-
When Venus occupies the 11th Raasi from the Navaamsa Rasi of Budha, all
doshas vanish.
-
When Jupiter, Venus, Mercury occupy the 5th and 9th Navaamsa raasi from
the lagna navaamsa raasi, then also all the doshas are mitigated.
-
If strong Jupiter with full rasmis (rays) occupy the trine or quadrant of
Moon, all doshas will be alleviated.
-
If Moon or Mercury occupy the quadrant from the navamsa rasi of Jupiter,
even the severest dosha will vanish.
-
If a benefic occupies with the aspect of a benefic, the upachaya raasis
(3, 6, 10, 11) from Moon, the doshas will be mitigated.
-
When the lord of the day is well - dignified or is posited in the rising
sign, the adverse qualities of Gulika need not be considered.
-
Gulika located in the rising sign produces no harm, when powerful Moon
occupies the rising sign holding the Navamsa of a benefic or that of the
lord of the day in question.
-
Jupiter or Venus, stationed in the Lagna, aspected to benefics, nullify
the evil effects of Gulika, Ardhaprahara, Bhujanga and Gridhra.
-
The favourable functions for Gulika - Harvest, the ingathering of corns,
oil bath, buying and selling (trade), making eyes on the image of a Deity,
death day anniversary, ornamentation, liquidation of debt, worship of
fire, opening ceremony, perfuming oneself, medical treatment, seating
oneself on an elephant or a horse, initiation, installation, worship of
fire in a black magic, gifts of lands, the study of the Vedas - in respect
of all these functions Gulika has no evil force. It is a benefic.
SURGERY
A few guidelines are essential for surgery. The best Nakshatras for surgery
are Ardra, Ashlesha, Jyeshta and Moola. Normally we avoid the Riktha Thithis
in a Muhurtha. But for a surgery, the Thithis 4, 9 and 14 are favourable.
Sundays and Mondays are to be avoided. In the case of an Orthopaedic
surgery, the Sun (denoting Bone) should be well placed. The planet that
rules over the organ, operated upon, should be well placed. Mars should be
favourable and unrelated to Saturn in the Muhurtha Chart. The 8th house from
the Ascendant should remain unoccupied.
CORONATION OF A KING:
AYANA |
Uttarayana is the best |
MASA |
Avoid Chaitra and Adhi Masa. |
PAKSHA |
Shukla Paksha is preferred. |
NAKSHATRA |
Asvini, Rohini, Mrigasira, Pushya, Uttaraphalguni, Hasta, Anuradha,
Uttarashadha, Sravana, Uttarabhadrapada and Revati are favourable. In
addition Chitra and Jyeshtha are also favourable.
|
TARA |
In addition to the normally favourable Taras, the Janma Nakshatra as
well as the 10th from there is favourable.
|
TITHI |
All odd Thithis of Sukla Paksha are favourable, except for the 9th. Of
the even Thithis the 2nd and 10th are favourable. Definitely avoid the
4th, 9th and 14th Thitis.
|
VARA |
Varas of benefics and that of the Sun are favourable. Mars's Vara at
night must be avoided.
|
LAGNA |
Gemini, Leo and Aquarius are most favourable. Kalaprakasika additionally
favours Aries, Taurus, Cancer, Sagittarius and Pisces.
|
BHAVAS |
8th - There should be no planet either benefic or
Benefics are favourable in angles, trines and in the 2nd, 3rd, and 11th
If there are benefics in the angles everything is favourable.
|

KARI NAAL
This is a concept followed only in the state of Tamilnadu. A few days
falling in the Tamil month are outright rejected. Functions like Marriage,
Upanayana, Seemantha and House Warming functions are not performed on such
days. The Varushaadi nool, an ancient Tamil treatise contains details
pertaining to this belief. It is quite possible that the learned Tamil
Scholars, wanted to avoid certain degrees of the Sun, which is why these
dates remain static. The following table gives the details of Kari Naal.

PANCHAKAM FACTOR
To find Panchaka for a selected muhurtha, Add the number of Tithi, Vaara,
Nakshatra, Lagna and Lagna Druvam at the time of Muhurta. (Many people and
panchangs omit, Lagna druvam*)
*Lagna Druvam - Lagnadruvam is a druva number given to some of the lagnas.
You have to add this to other four parameters and then the total is to be
divided by 9, Lagna Druvam Numbers are given as - For Mesha
-5,Rishabha-7,Makara-2,Kumbha-4 and Meena-6. For rest of the rasis , the LD
is 0.
Without adding the LD and arriving at a muhurtha is not correct according to
Vedic astrology.
After adding the 5 numbers, the sum is to be divided by 9, If the reminder
is : 3,5,7 and 9 it is considered to be a good muhurtha according to
Panchakam. If the reminder is 1,2,4,6 and 8, they have to be avoided. The
names of those panchakas with the reminder is given below. 1- Mrityu , 2 -
Agni , 4 -Raja, 6- Chora and 8-Roga For Marriage - Raja Panchaka should be
avoided For Upanayana - Roga Panchaka should be avoided
For construction and house warming- Chora and Agni Panchaka should be avoided
For Jobs - Raja Panchaka should be avoided
For Travel - Chora Panchaka should be avoided
On all election of Muhurtha, Mrithyu panchakam has to be avoided as it is considered most unfavourable.
Remedies for Panchakas are given as follows :-
1. Mrithyu Panchakam - Diamond/ gem as donation
2. Agni Panchakam - Sandal Paste as donation
4. Raja Panchakam- Donate Lemon
6. Chora Panchakam- Donation of lamp
8. Roga Panchakam - Donation of grains ( dhanya dhanam)
CONCLUSION
I wish to conclude this discussion with the views of Dr. B.V.Raman on Muhurtha (Vide MA, April 2022 Pages 224 - 225)
Horoscopy is diagnostic. It merely points out the ills but prescribes no remedies. Muhurtha is prescriptive as well as preventive. It tells us how by undertaking ventures at auspicious times one can ward off the evils and ensure success.
Muhurtha is a point of time defined by planetary factors. The value of Time is inestimable. All objects in nature are produced in Time. The truth of these statements requires no further proof.
Suffice it to say that we are living in a veritable sea of vibratory energies which unerringly and equitably supply the means of creating, maintaining and destroying life and its activities in our little universe. Planetary x-rays are unseen vibrations and they affect biological and psychological processes.
If we admit that the Sun is the source of all life and its activities then it follows that in Time which is ruled by the Sun - are embedded all forces or energies for the work of creation, protection and destruction. These energies have been very carefully unearthed by the ancient Maharishis and passed on as formulae and slokas in the classical texts on Muhurtha.
